Feeling trapped

Hello,

I just feel like sharing about what's going on in my life. I'm a tax accountant, I studied accounting and work in accounting but since the start it wasn't my passion or what I wanted to do. But my parents insisted I do something in business as a job security and I couldn't say no. But now 10 years later, having worked in accounting, it's definitely not what I want to do for the rest of my life. I actually hate it to much, I have so much anxiety in the morning from it. I feel so stuck and I'm not sure what to do. It's causing me alot of depression because my life has no meaning, I struggle to wake up everyday because of it. But I'm not sure how to move forward, I feel trapped in accounting because my degree and experience are from that. How can I navigate away from a field I earn my living in?

Re: Feeling trapped

@Fun just want to say the fact that you have stuck it out for so long even when you haven't enjoyed doing it is very admirable and shows alot of strength.

Are you able to study another field of interest whilst still working (if time permits) so you can have that opportunity to get out of accounting?

Re: Feeling trapped

Hi Fun,

I'm not one to take advice from regarding your work but I do know that accountants are needed in just about every field. Have you thought about something you're interested in and whether you can use your skills to help them?

like dog recue boards or environmental organisations?

Re: Feeling trapped

@Gremlin24  thank you for your reply.

I'm really thinking about it, I just have to save some money to be able to go back to studying. I guess this should be my first step. It's really scary. And what I fear the most is not finding a future job that pays well since I don't have experience in the field so I would be earning minimum wage and that's not sustainable especially that I have no support. Too many variables

Hi @ElephantEar3

Thank you for your reply.

I tried applying to non profits but got no feedback even though I have experience from big 4 accounting firms but I guess because these positions have very low turnover there are barely any positions available.

But you're right, thanks for reminding me, I need to continue applying, got nothing to lose

Re: Feeling trapped

@Fun can understand the fear and the worry of not earning enough to support yourself especially with the cost of things now days.

It's a tough situation but I hope you can find a way to get into doing something that you enjoy.

Good luck with it all 😊
